The Mythical Reception Playlist Exists

So remember about a year and a half ago when I said I would post our amazing reception playlist that I spent the better part of a year working on?

Haha, yeah...better late than never?

Playlist and notes after the cut:

1. "Werewolves of London" Warren Zevon
One of the first times we were hanging out together, we were trying to figure out what to listen to. Ben said he wished he had his Warren Zevon CD with him because he wanted to listen to "Werewolves of London," and I said I had it on my iPod. He joked later that that was the moment he knew he wanted to marry me.

2. "Mama Kin" Aerosmith
There's quite a bit of Aerosmith on this playlist because they're my favourite band and Ben puts up with it. This particular one doesn't have any special meaning, I just like it. That goes for most of the songs that don't have comments on this list.

3. "Burnin' for You" Blue Oyster Cult

4. "Seven Seas of Rhye" Queen

5. "The Motivator" T. Rex

6. "I Walk the Line" Johnny Cash

7. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" The Proclaimers

8. "You've Got the Love" Florence + the Machine

9. "You Make My Dreams Come True" Hall & Oates

10. "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" Louis Armstrong

11. "C'est Si Bon" Eartha Kitt

12. "More" Frank Sinatra

13. "You're the Top" Cole Porter

14. "Beyond the Sea" Bobby Darin

15. "Blue Skies" Ella Fitzgerald

16. "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" Dean Martin
Since we got married in January, parts of this playlist made a lot more sense then than in April. Oops.

17. "Here Comes the Sun" The Beatles

18. "Bei mir bist du schön" The Puppini Sisters
Ben and I both took German, he in high school and me in college, so we speak to each other in bits of German much of the time. He has a wider vocabulary but I have a better grasp of the grammar rules, so between us we make one competent German speaker.

19. "The Village Green Preservation Society" Kate Rusby

20. "Rainbow Connection" Kermit the Frog
Early in our relationship we bonded over a mutual love for the Muppets. I had several CDs of Muppets music we listened to on our long drives to his hometown.

21. "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" Talking Heads

22. "Sunshine" Aerosmith
I love Alice in Wonderland. Ben hates it. So an Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding was sadly out. But I snuck a song about Alice in Wonderland on the playlist anyway.

23. "A Little Respect" Erasure

24. "I Melt With You" Modern English

25. "Don't Stop Believin'" Journey
Trust no wedding playlist which does not include this song.

26. "Livin' on a Prayer" Bon Jovi
One guest at our wedding commented, "You're playing Bon Jovi at your wedding? I LOVE you."

27. "Thunderstruck" AC/DC

28. "Don't Change" INXS

29. "The Prettiest Star" David Bowie

30. "Whole Lotta Love" Led Zeppelin

31. "Start Wearing Purple" Gogol Bordello

32. "You Shook Me All Night Long" AC/DC

33. "Stand By Me" Ben E. King

34. "As Time Goes By" Frank Sinatra
One of the first movies we watched together was Casablanca. It was, at the time, streaming on Netflix, and every now and then I go back to the beginning of my Netflix streaming history because it's still there. I think it's adorable. And much better than the actual first movie we watched together, which was Kung-Fu Panda.

35. "Unforgettable" Nat King Cole
I didn't want this song on the playlist because it just makes me think of Watchmen, but Ben insisted. As I was uploading the playlist earlier, Ben said he can't enjoy this song because it makes him think of Watchmen. Aksdfkj.

36. "Dream a Little Dream of Me" Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

37. "Big Rock Candy Mountain" Harry McClintock

38. "Button Up Your Overcoat" Dick Haymes

39. "Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)" Frank Sinatra

40. "La Mer" Charles Trenet

41. "P.S. I Love You" The Beatles

42. "Fidelity" Regina Spektor

43. "If I Ever Leave This World Alive" Flogging Molly
On the same day as the Warren Zevon story, Ben learned that I have a history with Celtic music and dance. I had never met another person who loved Celtic music (outside of the programs in which I was involved, obviously) so I was thrilled to learn he loved it as much as I do. So few people in the world put up with my love of bagpipes.

44. "Come By Me" Harry Connick, Jr.

45. "Hey Ya (Acoustic Cover)" Matt Weddle (Obadiah Parker)
We watched a lot of Scrubs in our freshman year at college and one of the episodes we watched together was the Janitor's wedding, which included this song, sung by Ted. It was stuck in our heads for the better part of two months. While making this playlist I asked Ben if it would be too weird to include this, but we decided we couldn't NOT use it.

46. "Rock On" T. Rex

47. "Re: Your Brains" Jonathan Coulton
And what wedding playlist is complete without a song about zombies?

48. "Pink" Aerosmith

49. "You Give Love a Bad Name" Bon Jovi

50. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" Def Leppard

51. "Let's Do It" Joan Jett & Paul Westerberg
I LOVE this song. I love it. Cole Porter done by Joan Jett? Can I sign up twice?

52. "Immigrant Song" Led Zeppelin

53. "Green Onions" Booker T. & the MG's

54. "Grits Ain't Groceries" Little Milton

55. "Rocket" Def Leppard

56. "The Glow Worm" The Mills Brothers and Count Basie

57. "You Stepped Out of a Dream" Nat King Cole

58. "Conversation While Dancing" Jo Stafford

59. "On the Street Where You Live" Vic Damone
Okay, maybe this song is creepy. But I love it so much. And when we were living two hours apart, I had it on my Mad Men playlist which I listened to in the car a lot, so it always made me think of going to visit Ben.

60. "Baby (You've Got What it Takes)" Dinah Washington & Brook Benton

61. "It's Love I'm After" Mildred Bailey & Her Orchestra

62. "It's De-Lovely" Robbie Williams

63. "I'll Be Seeing You" Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra With Frank Sinatra

64. "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire" The Ink Spots
Ben sings this to me a lot, but I don't actually remember how that started.

65. "The Way You Look Tonight" Harry Connick, Jr.
I grew up watching Steve Martin's Father of the Bride too many times so there was no way this wasn't going on my playlist. Despite the fact that we got married in the morning and our reception was in the early afternoon.

66. "You Are My Lucky Star" Singin' in the Rain

67. "Best Love" Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers
This is another song I just love to little pieces. It's so sweet.

68. "Good Feeling" Violent Femmes
Ben and I actually are Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother. Met in our dorm first day of college. We thought this would be a cute subtle nod to that.

69. "Tenderly" Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
I already mentioned why the Muppets are on the playlist to begin with. Ben's favourite Muppet is Dr. Teeth, and I love this song.

70. "Just What I Needed" The Cars

71. "I Want You to Want Me" Cheap Trick
